Providing better access to Philadelphia through unified transit

I believe in a future where you don’t need to depend on a car to get around. It’s well understood that if less people are depending on cars, then there will be less congestion on our streets and less pollution in our air. In fact, private vehicles are the number one source for carbon emissions. And if so many destinations (like work and school and childcare) are only easily accessible by car, then we’re leaving those without access to cars behind. And lest we forget the record-high cost of gas, and parking, and maintenance. There’s a tried-and-true solution for this: public and shared transit.

But I know…I know…people love their cars. When I started a petition to close down one street in Philadelphia to cars, I felt passionate support and fierce resistance. We can’t just expect people to give up their cars. We need to make public and shared transit a more attractive alternative. But today, these options are often seen as intimidating or confusing. And when you consider all of the new mobility options across cities, each with their own new app or payment method, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by options.

There is an opportunity for us to do better. Our company’s mission is to help riders access their city through a unified transit experience. We want riders to have easy access to every bus, bike, scooter, and subway —all in one place.

Organizations can sign up with Jawnt to get access to a unified platform of mobility options.

To achieve this vision, we are starting by working with organizations — like employers, real estate companies, co-working spaces, and universities — because we believe that they are key to making systemic change.

Through Jawnt's platform, organizations can provide all of their members with universal mobility. Organizations customize their Jawnt pass with available mobility options and then we take care of the rest. We manage the purchasing and distribution of discounted passes, integrate into HR and payroll systems, and provide members with support (think: commute planning and rewards) to get the most out of their Jawnt pass and their city.

We know this is a critical time for organizations to be thinking about how we relate to our city. The demand for parking and the cost for gas is higher than ever. With remote and hybrid work the new normal for many, how can organizations make it more enticing for employees that need to come into the office? How can we encourage our remote employees to get around the city and support local businesses?

Our cities are where we work, where we live, and where we play. We believe that everyone deserves access to their city and the freedom to be able to get around. If your organization believes so too, we want to hear from you.

We are staunch supporters of public and shared transit — we fully believe these are the best vehicles for improving our cities and our climate. We act as sales partners for our partnered mobility providers, helping them increase revenue and get riders back on board and giving them the tools and support they need to run enterprise and institutional fare programs.

For example: We are proud to be working with SEPTA to help them scale the Key Advantage pilot program — a major initiative that enables Philadelphia employers to offer discounted access to bus and subway to all of their emploees. We have also partnered with Indego bikeshare to help get more people riding bikes around Philadelphia.

Jawnt's roots are here in Philly. We know we need to make critical investments in transit, for environmental and social reasons, and we are thrilled to be able to support our hometown city. But Philadelphia is not unique — all of us deserve better access to our cities through better, unified transit.

We’re here to make it happen and provide universal mobility for all.
